The Student Voices and Advocacy Sub-Committee of the UniSey Alumni Association, chaired by Ms. Karyn Pouponneau, held a productive meeting yesterday at the University of Seychelles Mont Fleuri campus to discuss upcoming initiatives aimed at strengthening engagement with students. The meeting was attended by three out of five members on the sub-committee. The session proved highly productive, with the committee drafting several activities to be incorporated into its upcoming calendar of events.
Among the key initiatives discussed were awareness sessions about the UniSey Alumni Association to be delivered to current University of Seychelles students, as well as students in post-secondary and secondary institutions. These sessions aim to introduce students to the role and purpose of the Alumni Association and encourage early engagement with the alumni network.
The committee also plans to collaborate with the Mentorship Committee on this initiative. The proposal will be presented at the upcoming meeting, scheduled for Wednesday 18th March, with all committee chairs for further discussion and coordination. In addition, the committee explored the idea of hosting informal happy hour gatherings, which will serve as networking opportunities while also helping to raise funds in support of the committee’s activities.
Recognising the demanding schedules of its members, the committee agreed to adopt a flexible approach to participation by alternating involvement in activities to ensure sustained engagement and support for upcoming initiatives. As an initial step, the committee will engage with the University of Seychelles through Mr. Hendricko Vidot, the Executive Committee member responsible for liaising between the Association and the University, to review student timetables and identify a suitable opportunity for the first engagement activity.
The proposed approach is to conduct short pop-up sessions in classrooms, subject to lecturers agreeing to conclude their classes slightly earlier than scheduled. This would allow the committee to briefly engage with students while minimising disruption to their academic timetable. These initiatives reflect the Alumni Association’s commitment to strengthening connections between alumni and students and supporting opportunities for engagement, mentorship, and collaboration within the UniSey community.
